How to Install the Real Facebook App on Kindle Fire

by Jeff Benjamin on November 19, 2011

So Amazon included a Facebook app with Kindle Fire. The problem is, it’s not actually an app at all, just a link to m.facebook.com. Very lame indeed.

Fortunately, there is a simple way to get the real Facebook app on Kindle Fire using a few easy steps…

How to Install Facebook on Kindle Fire

Note: Make sure you have “Allow Installation of Applications” enabled in your Kindle Fire device settings.

Step 1: Follow our Android Market tutorial to get Android Market and download the Dropbox app and log in.

Step 2: On your computer, download and extract the Facebook app, and save the Facebook 1.5.5 apk file to a folder on Dropbox.

Step 3: On your Kindle Fire open Dropbox, tap on the Facebook 1.5.2.apk file and select install.

That’s it. All you need is Dropbox, and you can install the Facebook app. You don’t even need a rooted Kindle Fire to install the app.

Hope this helps you guys. What do you think?

You don’t need to root your phone or install market for this. Just go to http://www.dropbox.com/android and install Dropbox, then install this.

Thanks Brian!!!! One more thing…To install dropbox on Kindle Fire you must use the https:// prefix. Just a word of not for anyone that wants to use Brian’s method.

that doesn’t work, it tells you “could not find that app in the amazon appstore for android at this time”

This worked as promised. Any chance there’s a Gmail .apk file out there? Rooting didn’t go so well. Windows keeps giving me a “not responding” message on SuperOneClick so if you find the Gmail .apk let us know.

You may want to try rebooting Windows. I can’t say if that will work for sure, but it did for me when I received “not responding” errors.

Can you use box.net instead of dropbox? There’s already an app for that for kindle fire.

      • idbirds

        Never mind. Box.net works!

In Step 2 there is an error that may confuse some people. It says facebook app 1.5.5, when it should say 1.5.2

I used box.net on the kindle fire since it is already in the amazon appstore. I installed that app on the fire, then logged in to the site(box.net) on my PC. Next I unzip the faCEBOOK app, then drag and drop the facebook app from my PC to the box.net webpage on my PC.

Finally, I look in my box.net app on my kindle and see the app is now there. I click it and install.

Personally I installed the facebook 1.8.1 apk that I found throught a google search.

      • Neal

how do you unzip the file?

    • CloudyHaze

i just emailed the adk file to myself and opened it on the device. That saved the file locally where I could access it with openoffice (open folders) and then did the install. Worked like a champ. I did see there is a newer version of the app available but I’m guessing the adk isn’t easily accessible.

Jeff, i searched in the android market, and i cant the facebook app, downloaded and installed yours, but it keeps telling me, that theres an update, but cant download it. Any info how can a get the last bits?

Thanks Jeff. I tinkered with the apk & replaced the launcher icon with a higher resolution one. Now it looks pretty on the fire. Here’s the link if anyone wants to DL it. http://www.mediafire.com/?ytd8x97an7xitb2

Do you mind me asking how you did it? I’m looking to replace the icons for the new version of the FB app as well as for Twitter but am having some trouble after extracting the APKs…

Any sign of the APK for the new version of Facebook on Android?

Geez I didn’t even need Dropbox or email, just downloaded then unzipped using EsFileExplorer and opened the Apo. It’s annoying though that the top feed story is Upgrade, but it won’t install from the Amazon market.

so i installed the facebook app and then i even went to the system/app folder and deleted the facebook app/shortcut the kindle fire came with. is there a way i can restore that file now? i kind of miss the shortcut now :0(

Can anyone tell me why the facebook app is not in the android market when viewed on a rooted kindle fire? What other apps do not show up in the android market on a rooted kindle fire?

      Thanks!

Jeff…what am I doing wrong? I love your video but I can’t seem to get my KF to recognize the “real” FB file. I’ve got Dropbox loaded on each device and I set up the folder and file the way you instruct on my PC but when I turn on the dropbox on the KF all I see is some default files (3) and not the FB file. Any suggestions? Thanks for all your great videos, too

    • O4chevymom

i have tried it your way several times and it is not working

    • Coreynlaceesmom

I can not comment on facebook from my kindle fire anymore…We got it a week ago and I could sit in my living room and carry on a conversation of facebook from it…Now when I try to post or comment it just keeps “thinking”…what is going on????

    • Vikki_ohara

I am completely un-tech savvy but I followed your directions, and with a bit of struggle here and there until I figured out what you were talking about I did this and it was completely successful. It does say there is a newer app available but when I click on it is the mobile app. I thought I don’t want that. So I haven’t downloaded it. BUT…my whole reason for doing this was to be able to “share” posts on my fire like I can from my desk top. This apk does not allow that. HOW IN THE WORLD DO I GET TO SHARE POSTS FROM MY FIRE LIKE I CAN FROM MY DESKTOP?

How do I uninstsll ‘facebook”? Since deactivating my facebook account, a facebook login screen loads each time I navigate to the web.
